This week, the first week of school this term in maths, we have been reflecting on our overall prior knowledge that we learnt from the last couple of terms this year. This is a mixture of word problems we have been doing. Feel free to leave comments below!

This term for our topic, we are learning about how to survive anywhere we go and the main focus is to adapt with things or around us like the environment and etc.

If you're sitting on on your chair, wondering what the definition of adaptation is, well... adaptation is when you change to make things suitable for things around you, things that are new to you. Here is my writing about the immersion assembly that we had on Monday, the first day back at school...

I could feel the excitement scorching in my little stomach, knowing that it was immersion assembly for the first day back at school. The fascinating atmosphere smelt like the time of a new beginning...well it was the start of term four. I had finally realized that this year had passed by really quickly.

*Screeeeech* as the microphone made a high shrieking sound making my ears wound. I had a little bit of a fright. I continued on walking to find the nearest seat on the edge so I could see.

As we sat down on our seats, our principal ‘Mr Burt’, had eventually started to play his guitar as it was time to sing the national anthem. A couple of minutes had gone by and it was the time for Mr Burt's little movie or item. I found it really captivating that his movie was about a fiapoko parrot- (the misleading parrot)

Then as soon as Mr Burt concluded his last words for his item, he announced the next team to perform. “Ladies and gentlemen, please give it up for... teammmm one”, he yelled with expression.

Just then, the leader of team one ‘Miss George’ swiftly went onto the stage and explained to us what they were going to be learning about this term. As she finished her speech, a movie suddenly played and it showed hilarious animals from the zoo.

After about thirty or forty minutes, it was finally time for team fives item, which was the intermediate block. Suddenly, Mr Wiseman- (one of the teachers in the intermediate block) introduced us to their performance. “We are going to have a noodle eating competition and the winner gets to keep my Mr Monkey, the stuffed monkey”, he said as he placed Mr Monkey on the stage.

Mr Wiseman went on and on about the rules of the competition and one of them was that they had to eat with traditional Asian chopsticks. I could see that the other teachers won’t comfortable with chopsticks because they usually eat with either their hands or forks, whatever their tradition is. I could sense the winner of the competition and it would probably be Miss Clark.

I knew that she was really comfortable using chopsticks because it’s her tradition and maybe other people noticed that as well. I could hear people cheering for her as she celebrates her victory. After the competition, the other competitors had a argument about it wasn't fair that they are different to each other and they also had different ways to adapt to their environment.

After the overall experience, I was pretty impressed with the performance that the teachers had been busy doing throughout the holidays. I was really amused.

How do you know about what happened in your family before you were born?

• I stay up late and  listen to my parents and grandparents when they tell stories or whether we have a family talk.
• How do we know how people lived long ago?
• There were carvings of very special icons/items/special people or plants that has been carried out through generation to generation.
• How did Makereti know what life was like for iwi before she was born?
• Makereti wrote a book about how the old-time Maori lived before the arrival of the Pakeha. She described what it was like to live in a kainga:

What are some of the rules we have:

• At home - No swearing, No fighting, Don’t talk back.
• At school- Be respectful to each other, No shoes inside, No swearing
• Respect people property- No stealing stuff, No smacking window.
• When we go out to different places-Always be nice to people, Don’t be rude.
• When we are with different people- No Asking them for 1v1, No stealing stuff

Why do we have rules?

• What would happen if there were no rules?
• Every single person would go crazy if there were no rules!
• Make a chart showing family or school rules
• 
• How do we make social rules? Who makes them?
• We make social rules by respecting the normal rules and make everything easier to do. The Prime Minister makes social rules.
• If you think a rule or law is bad, what can you do about it?
• We can contact the Prime Minister and tell him what's best for nz.
• How do you decide if a rule is good or bad? Think about who the rule is good

                  or bad for?

• By doing and respecting them and make a good deal out of it.
• What happens when we disobey rules?
• We could be charged to court or get your self in a detention!

Similarities and Differences

• Think about and discuss all the ways that your life might be similar to that of a child living in Aotearoa before Pakeha settlers arrived.
• There is one thing that is similar to my life and that was the time when I was been taught how to hunt for food.
• Discuss the ways that your life is different from that of a Māori child before the Pakeha settlers arrived.
• I have never had any settlers arriving.
• Make two lists, one for things that are the same and one for things that are different.

Place Names

• Think of Māori place names in your area.
• Rangitoto Island
• Find out why those names were given. Use a Māori dictionary (if you need to) or talk to a kuia and kaumatua.
• The name Rangitoto is sky blood in English
• Think of some non-Māori place names in your area.
• One Tree Hill

• Find out why those names were given.
• Because It is an important memorial place for both Māori and other New Zealanders.
• Discuss the differences between the way Māori and non-Māori name places.
• It is because there are two cultures that has became as one after they had signed the treaty and that is because there was Maori and Pakeha.
• Discuss why Māori and non-Māori have named places differently.
• It could be about they wanted to share the land with each other and become friendly to one another.

Holiday Writing T1 W1

One balmy morning on the first day of the holidays, the sun beamed through my bedroom curtains making my eyes wound. Without hesitation, I swiftly jumped out of bed and slowly walked towards the curtains and yanked them open. As I opened them up my eye caught a glimpse of the birds chirping all around, mums pushing prams and the traffic jamming.

I stared outside the window for a few minutes watching the birds chirping and as I had finished...I quietly walked into the living room as it was an early morning. I didn’t want to wake up my siblings up. They would munch up all the cereal and leave me the plastic box. After I had eaten my cereal I wondered everywhere trying to find my plain blue shirt, my black and green old shoes and my navy coloured trousers. After a little while, I suddenly found them hanging on the top shelf in my wardrobe.

Meanwhile, I made my way for the car trying to beat all my siblings as I really wanted to sit in the front seat. “Off to the beach we go!”, I yelled as the engine of the car started to roam. With my back pushing against the soft comfortable chair,I pressed the “Play” button on the radio and listened to some music as the car drove along.

As the car pulled over to a nearby parking lot, I swiftly packed all of my swimming gear and our picnic too. I wandered over to the beach looking for a quiet and cooled area to sit at since the weather was 24°C. After a few minutes later...I finally found a place to sit and chill off for the school holidays. “Ahhh.....”, I yawned as the tide came rushing in towards my feet. It is time for picnic and my mother came in with the scrumptious yummy picnic. “That’s mine!!!!!!!! Gimmie”, everyone yelled as they grabbed a handful from each plate and bowl.
